Lest We Forget is a good introduction to Or Nué if you have no prior experience with the technique. Working a circular motif is a good start to Or Nué embroidery as you can concentrate on learning the shading by couching colour.
Strong and fragile at the same time, wild poppies, with their vibrant, striking colour and paper thin, delicate petals are among the most striking and beautiful wild flowers I know.
Or Nué (or shaded gold) is a fascinating metal thread embroidery technique, where metal threads are couched in place with coloured silks to create patterns. The delicate petals are embroidered with three shades of red filament silk, varying the density of the stitches to create the shading.
The centre of the poppy is created with kid leather over felt padding and surrounded with overstretched pearl purl.
The size of the design lends itself perfectly for a paperweight or a pot lid, but looks really sweet simply framed.
I hope you will get as much pleasure embroidering your Lest We Forget as I did.
Happy Stitching, Anna
