Mountain Oak is an exciting project if you have some prior experience with crewel work and are looking for something slightly more challenging to further develop your skills.
The Tree of Life is such an iconic motif in crewel embroidery. I have always wanted to design and stitch one of my own, and a trip to the French Alps was the perfect inspiration and opportunity to do so. Mountain Oak is very much inspired by traditional crewel embroidery. The large tree and hillocks are embroidered using a palette of fresh greens and blues and I replaced the common stately stag is with a cheeky mountain goat.
The embroidery is worked onto Ivory linen twill, using 33 different embroidery stitches and 7 variations of laid trellis to create textures and patterns within the design. The detailed instructions and diagrams will help guide you step by step through the project however, you might find it helpful to have a stitch directory at hand – I always do.
The shape and size of the fabric panel is perfect for a large pillow, which is what I did with mine. It would look equally stunning framed.
I hope you will get as much pleasure embroidering your Mountain Oak as I did.
Happy Stitching, Anna
